How to Cool Your 2-Story Home Efficiently!

comfort-first-logoIf you own or live in a 2-story home anywhere in the Joliet area, then it’s no secret that you’d like to do everything you can to save money while living in it, right?

With wintertime demanding a lot of our heaters, it makes sense that when summer rolls around, we want to use as little power as possible with our air conditioners. But, we also want to be comfortable! Since heat rises, it can make it a bit challenging to enjoy your whole home during the summer months.

Fortunately, there are methods to more efficiently cool your 2-story living space. Read on to learn more!

Use Your Portable Air Conditioners More Effectively

Yes, it’s true, if you have portable air conditioning systems or window units, we’re going to tell you that the best thing to do for your home’s comfort and efficiency is to upgrade to a whole-house air conditioner.

But, we also get it–portable systems are often the only thing in your budget for now, and that’s okay. Let’s say this is the case–are you trying to get one portable system to do too much work? Depending on the manufacturer, the average portable system can cool about 400-500 sq. feet. So having more than one portable system and turning the thermostat up on it a bit will actually use less power and save you more money than trying to use just one.

Upgrade to Ductless Cooling

Let’s say your budget is ready for you to upgrade to centralized cooling, or you already have a traditional central air conditioner in your home. Have you considered upgrading again, to a ductless system?

Ductless air conditioners, also called ductless mini-splits, operate on heat pump technology. This means they’re not only capable of effectively and efficiently cooling a space, but heating your living space, as well. In many cases, ductless systems are more efficient than furnaces as heating systems because they transfer heat instead of generating it.

The one thing that truly sets ductless systems apart from their central AC counterparts is their setup. As we said, it’s a heat pump system. But unlike a heat pump which just has a single outdoor unit connected to a single indoor unit via ductwork, a ductless system has an outdoor unit that’s connected to up to 4 indoor air handlers.

These air handlers can be mounted up on the wall in any space you want them in, and can be independently controlled from one another. That’s right, they each have their own thermostat, so if you want more cooling in one area than another, you don’t have to blast the same air throughout the entire home.

This is an ideal way to cool your 2-story home as efficiently as possible this summer and for summers to come! Our team is happy to help you decide if a ductless system is right for you, and provide professional installation.
